Enphase Envoy IQ Connection Guide

Enphase IQ Gateway Connection Guide

This article contains troubleshooting steps to resolve communication issues with the Enphase IQ Gateway (previously known as IQ Envoy). The IQ Gateway sends information about your solar equipment to the cloud via your home internet or a cellular modem.

When everything is working correctly, Omnidian continuously monitors your system and alerts you to performance issues. When communication isn't working, Omnidian will ask that you perform troubleshooting steps to restore the connection.

Maintaining system communication is required if your solar contract includes a performance guarantee.

If you've never done troubleshooting before, the overview will help familiarize you with your system components.

Overview of Solar Hardware

IQ Gateway

The IQ Gateway is usually located inside a combiner box, but not always. This is what the IQ Gateway looks like by itself:

Combiner Box

Many IQ Gateways are located inside a combiner box and will look similar to the examples below:

Electrical Service Panel

In some cases, the IQ Gateway is not within a combiner box and is located near your breaker box or subpanel. Examples:

AC Disconnect Lever

The AC Disconnect lever is typically located outside and is an important safety feature of your system.

Overview of Communication Hardware

Powerline Adapters (PLA)

PLAs enable an Ethernet connection to your internet through your home's electrical setup. This is also known as Ethernet-over-power. There are always two units: one attached to the IQ Gateway, and one attached to your internet modem.

Wi-Fi Repeater

If your IQ Gateway communicates via Wi-Fi instead of Ethernet, you may have a Wi-Fi repeater between your Gateway and the modem to increase speed and reliability.

Multitech or Enphase Modem

A cellular modem may be attached to the IQ Gateway to enable cell communications.

Troubleshooting Procedure

  1. Determine how your system connects to the cloud:
    1. Confirm the communication type by viewing your Enphase Enlighten account, or by checking the following:
      • Ethernet: Visible Ethernet cord coming from the IQ Gateway, possibly attached to a PLA, which is plugged into a wall outlet
      • Wi-Fi: No Ethernet cords attached to the IQ Gateway, no modems visible
      • Cellular: A modem is attached to the IQ Gateway, or an antenna is visible on the combiner box.
  2. Verify the connection is active and working.
    • Ethernet connected:
      1. Ensure your internet hardware (e.g., modem, router) is properly set up, and you have functional internet in your home.

Note: The router and modem can be merged into one device, or they can be separated into two devices.

Example of a router and modem separated into two devices:

Modem and wireless router connected:

Example of the connections of a router and a modem merged in one device:

  1. Ensure the Ethernet cable from the solar system is plugged into your internet (router).
    • Your solar system could be connected via Ethernet in one of these ways:
      • Direct connection via an Ethernet cable:

Wi-Fi Connected

If your Wi-Fi was temporarily out of service but nothing else has changed, a power cycle of the Envoy device is often all that is needed.

  1. Locate the IQ Gateway and turn off the Gateway-related breaker (turn all solar breakers off if they are not labeled).
  2. Leave off for 45 seconds, then turn the breakers back on.

If your IQ Gateway has no cellular modem or antenna attached and no Ethernet cord attached, it is likely communicating wirelessly.

  1. Double-check by visiting your Enphase Enlighten App.
  2. Search for Gateway, Communications, or Wi-Fi.
    • Alternatively, check the bell icon on the top right of the app.
    • You may want to use a browser other than Google Chrome when going through the steps, as there are reported issues with this browser.
  3. Reconnect your system to Wi-Fi by visiting the Enphase official help pages listed below.

Cell-Connected

If you have identified that your Envoy-IQ communicates via a cell modem, it may have been affected by the 3G Sunset or an expired cellular contract.

  1. Confirm this by checking with Omnidian or directly with Enphase.

If your Multitech modem is 3G, power cycling will not fix the issue.

  1. Connect the Envoy-S-Metered to your Wi-Fi signal.
    • If you do not have a strong wireless signal or wish to continue using cellular communications, a new Multitech modem can be purchased along with the cell plan required to activate it.
  2. Check with us at Omnidian before ordering a new modem to see if we can help save you money!
    • Some, but unfortunately not all, communication-related costs are covered under service warranties.
    • Omnidian's support team can find this out for you.

Powercycle Equipment

Now that you've determined the IQ Gateway's method of communication, follow the appropriate power cycling steps outlined below:

Ethernet-Connected System Power Cycle Guide

  1. Power off the Envoy IQ by turning off the breakers in the combiner box.
  2. Unplug the router and the modem.
  3. Wait 30 seconds.
    • If you have PLAs, unplug both PLAs.
  4. Plug the modem back in.
  5. Wait at least 60 seconds.
    • Usually, the modems have four lights:
      • Power light
      • Received light
      • Send light
      • Activity light
        1. Ensure the first three lights are stable, indicating the modem is fully powered on.
  6. Plug the router back in.
  7. Wait at least 2 minutes.
    • The lights on your router should start blinking.
  8. Look at the router’s status indicator light.
    • There should be a blinking or steady light for the internet connection.
  9. Plug PLAs back in.
  10. Turn the Envoy IQ back on via the breakers inside the combiner box.
    • Some systems have a separate AC Disconnect lever in addition to the dial located on your inverter.
      • Ensure that the lever is in the ON position.
    • If the Envoy IQ displays a solid green light by the Cloud icon, the Envoy is connected to Enlighten.

Cellular-Connected System Power Cycle Guide (verified 4G, not 3G)

  1. Power off the Envoy IQ by turning off the breakers in the combiner box.
  2. Unplug the modem power cords from the Envoy.
    • There may be one or two USB cords going from the modem to the Envoy.
  3. Wait 30 seconds.
  4. Plug the Multitech modem back into the Envoy IQ.
  5. Turn the Envoy IQ back on via the breakers inside the combiner box.
