Leasing a Solar System: Who to Call and When
Leasing a Solar System: Who to Call and When
As a customer with a leased solar system, you've made a smart choice to invest in clean energy. While your solar journey is designed to be seamless, you may find that several different companies are involved in your system's lifecycle. To ensure you always have the right support, this guide will help you understand who to contact for specific reasons.
Key Contacts for Your Solar System
Financier / Contract Holder: This is the company that holds your solar lease, Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), or loan. They are the primary entity for all matters related to your contract.
Contact them for:
- General contract questions
- Non-technical inquiries about your system
- As a secondary point of contact, if your installer is not immediately available
- Utility bill questions
Solar Installer: This is the contractor who designed and installed the system on your roof, handled the inspection process, and turned it on. Contact them for questions about the proposal, design, or installation process up until the system is fully operational.
Solar Manufacturer: The components of your solar system—including the panels, inverters, batteries, and racking—are produced by various manufacturers. The monitoring app you use to view your solar production is typically from the inverter manufacturer (e.g., SolarEdge, Enphase).
Note: You generally won't need to contact the manufacturer directly, but their websites and mobile apps can be an excellent resource for detailed information about your equipment. This company partners with your financier to handle the monthly payments for your solar contract.
Servicing or Billing provider: Not always, but in most cases, there is a company handling billing for your monthly lease payments. This company may have the same name as your contract holder, or it might differ.
Contact them for:
- Questions about your bill or payments
- Account updates, such as a change of address if you are moving or refinancing your home
